Low Gate Score: Don't Worry

  • Apply to as many departments as you can. The cut-off varies yearly. No one can predict anything regarding the same. The reason may be:
    • There is a possibility that some of the high scorers are currently in the pre-final year of their programme.
    • From past few years, various PSUs require GATE score as a prerequisite. Some of the high-score GATE qualified students may prefer PSUs instead of pursuing MTech.
    • There may be a variation in number of admission seats of a programme.
  • There are some institutes who take their own entrance examination for PG programmes. Some of these are: IIIT Hyderabad, IIIT Bangalore, CSIR, DAIICT, ISI Kolkata, Thapar university, ISM Dhanbad and BITS Pilani.

  • Read the information brochure of each institute carefully. Look for the various interdisciplinary/MS/MSc/MTech(RA) options available in each institute. For queries relating to specific departments (placements/research/institute's culture), contact the relevant persons studying there through the mail ids given on the institute's website. You can also ask your doubts here: http://www.gatecounsellor.com/USCP.php
  • Some of the institutes also offer admissions during their winter semester. Some of these are: IIT Delhi, BITS Pilani (applications are invited somewhere in the last week of October).
  • The PSUs will soon be conducting their exams. Their syllabus is quite similar to the GATE syllabus. Your GATE preparation can definitely increase your chances of clearing these exams.
  • If you are interested in doing research, please try to do it from the very top institutes of India. Otherwise, it may You can always prepare for GATE exam again.

About Year In Industry

Year In Industry is an initiative of the Engineering Development Trust (EDT), a registered education charity that helps talented young people achieve their full potential through careers in engineering, science and technology.
YINI provide high-quality, paid placements for students interested in all areas of engineering and science, and have placed students with 300 top UK companies including Shell, Rolls Royce, British Energy, Network Rail and AstraZeneca. These placements provide the skills and knowledge employers are looking for, and the experience that will help the students make the most of university. Placements are situated all around the country and a regional YINI manager will provide mentorship and support whenever necessary. The students typically earn between £9,000 to £14,000 from August / September to June / July.
The inaugural Kingsbury Scholarship was awarded to Catherine Stevenson, who started her MEng course in Aeronautics in October 2012. Through YINI she took a placement to work for a year at Scottish Power before she started at Imperial.
“My placement through YINI at Scottish Power was invaluable in helping understand how engineering and technology are practically applied to industrial solutions, and I’m sure this will help give me a head-start on my course at Imperial. The placement also helped instil in me a valuable work ethic and a useful glimpse of the working world as an engineer that has made me all the more determined to qualify as a chartered engineer after I graduate. I am delighted and honoured to have been awarded this prestigious scholarship, and am very excited to now be starting at Imperial.”
